The U. S. Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it will start promoting new treatments for heartburn and acid reflux by Tuesday, according to a statement from the agency.
The agency also said it was "delaying" that the product is available by end of week and that more patients would be required to wait until May.
"We have made the decision to start promoting new treatments for these conditions, with the promise of better long-term results," the agency said in the statement.
It said it was delaying that goal until May because of the risks of serious cardiovascular disease and side effects.
The agency said it would also "review all clinical trials and ensure the new treatment is as effective as expected."
The agency said the announcement comes after a study that compared the drugs, including omeprazole, to a placebo and a drug taken for heartburn in 2006.
The study examined a group of patients who had tried to take omeprazole for more than five years for heartburn, ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It found that patients in the study were more likely to take the drugs than those who were not.
"There is a lot of concern that the drugs are not as effective as those in the studies," the FDA said in the statement.
It said there was also a concern that the drugs were associated with side effects like an increased risk of bleeding, increased heart attack and low blood pressure.
The agency said the FDA has taken the necessary steps to address that concern, including requiring patients to have a "comprehensive history" of any heartburn or ulcers that they have.
"We are continuing to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drugs, and we are continuing to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the drugs as well as the long-term safety and efficacy of the drug in these patients," the agency said in the statement.
The agency also said that it would take "extra measures" to ensure that all patients treated for heartburn and acid reflux are not prescribed other medications, including heartburn medications and acid-reducing therapies.
